Train o Rama Ohio

Hello a friend of mine went passed this place today. He is not a train guy but he said it looked cool from the outside. Has anyone been there? Here is a link. http://trainorama.net/ . I may be up that way this weekend and wanted to know if its worth a stop in. Thanks Frank

Hello Frank,

I was visiting in-laws in that area a few years ago and my father in law took me there. It’s not a real scale modeling type of layout, more of an elaborate tinplate type layout. I thought it was quite interesting. and is indeed quite large. It took a while to check it all out. Certainly beats watching reality TV all afternoon.

While in the area you might want to swing by the railroad museam in Bellvue a few miles away. (I think it was Bellvue, might be Bellveiw. It’s the town that was always the operating hub of the NKP. Once in the area you’ll find it). A great collection of railroad equipment there including a Pennsy RPO, an Erie 6-6-4 streamlined sleeper, NKP and Wabash diesels in excellent restored condition, etc. Very well worth a visit.

Also a pretty good hobby shop/bike shop in Sandusky, on Washington Street, I believe.

Hope this helps,

Benny Peters

Trainorama is pretty cool…its more display purpose and less on detail and prototype.

As far as NKP Mad River in Bellevue…Great place!!! unfortuneately they are closed until further notice. A Tornado went thru Bellevue on Wednesday night and knocked the town around pretty good. I’m not sure on the extent to the damage at the NKP museum. But it was posted on their facebook page on Wednesday that they will be closed until further notice.

Frank,I have been there several times and its interesting enough for a look see but,not its not spectacular. There’s a hobby shop in the front part. The last time I was there was about 3 years ago.

The museum in Bellevue is nice and you can railfan the NS and you might even see a W&LE train.

While your in that area why not visit the sweeping curve coming off the Bay Bridge by Sonny’s Beach since its a short drive from Trainorama?

Hello well it looks like ill stop and check it out. I should be about 8 miles away. I have been to the Mad River Museum a few times mostly when I was a kid. I did take my little girl a few years ago we had a good time looking at all the stuff.

I was looking for some hobby shops found a few. But they seem to be light on train stuff. After all its right on the lake lot of boaters there. I have some friends that live up there but no one but me likes trains. Thanks for all the help Frank

Hello well I had time to stop in and check out Train o Rama last weekend. It was cool for what it is. He has a lot of stuff that’s for sure. It is mostly O with some HO,N, and some Z . I was the only one in there and they were very nice folks they had everything running gave me some history on the place. I think he would do better if they were by Mad River Museum. I did not have a lot of time to go train watching. But were I was at I could see some tracks and seen 4 trains go past. Have a nice day Frank
