What was the train symbol for Eureka, CA? I keep wanting to say EU but that was Eugene.

Are we talking Amtrak or a specific railroad here? EKA is the Amtrak station code for Eureka, CA. The Amtrak station code for Eugene, OR is EUG. I suspect UP or BNSF might have a different station code…

I suspect you are looking for the ‘telegraph’ call sign for Eureka, CA - You will need to find an old SP/NWP timetable to get that information. Anyone got an old emplyee TT that could pass on the info?

Since Eureka was officially on the NWP, there may not have been an SP train symbol for Eureka itself. I don’t think any NWP location symbols appear on this list (and I can’t recall seeing Eureka on others, but I wasn’t looking):

There were specific trains symboled for transfers to the NWP. At least one of these (the Northwestern Pacific Perishable) was symboled NWP. If you wanted to freelance something, that pattern could carry over. In SP parlance, it might be a NWM (Northwestern Pacific Merchandise). I would guess that most (or all) connections were made through Schellville in your era (and most or all of those from Roseville).

Although the NWP Historical Society appears to be somewhat dormant, perhaps one of their back issues could shed some light.

Thanks Jim and Byron. I guess the reason I can’t find it is there isn’t one. I use the link from Byron all the time and I was surprised Eureka wasn’t listed when I first started looking. Guessing how the SP determined the symbols I will have to freelance EA, EK or ER - for Eureka. I’ll have to kick around some
