When plans were being made for the trans-Siberian railroad, what American railroad was it to be based on?
- Southern Pacific
- Great Northern
- Union Pacific
- Northern Pacific

Union Pacific-pure guess. I know it’s not Herbert Hoover this time.
I vote for the NP>>>glennbob
I would guess the UP also, but I really have no clue.
Great Northern is my guess.
New York, Ontario and Western?
Old Timer
UP, i think the trans siberian RR was conceved jsut after the trans contenental RR waws finished.
I would have used the CP but that is not on your list.

I want to guess ATSF. They crossed Siberia.

LOL Nanaimo!!!
I would think that it would be Union Pacific based on the fact that it was the first transcon and also that part of being Russian (it goes back to the czarist era) is doing projects on a heroic scale, which in this case would top the Union Pacific.
…Must say: Union Pacific…Would think Central Pacific to be listed too but it’s not…so UP.
The D&RGW. The Railroad through Siberia, not around it!
Actually, wasn’t the Siberian Railroad part of the buyout with the SP organized by Anshutz? This shot surely looks cold enough to be Siberian:
Yup, just before Bagdad.
(pssst…SP built that line)
I guess #1 Southern Pacific.
(Soviet Pacific?)

I’ll guess it was based on the Great Northern. Would’nt guess Southern Pacific, but I could be wrong.
Given the similarities in terrain and the timing(late 19th cent) I’d go w/GN
I would say Southern Pacific. SP has experience in runing in bitter cold weather, and heavy mountain railroading. Also,SP could have taught the Soviets that washing locomotives was unnessary[:)].
Come to think of it, UP and The Trans-Siberian both had to deal with a big-honkin’ lake in the way. UP.had to deal with the Great Salt Lake, Trans-Siberian with Lake Baikal (or something like that).
IT WAS THE UNION PACIFIC RAILROAD!
