With her tender, and fueled up the Big Boy was the heaviest thing on the rails. Even though the Alleghany had a higher tractive effort, was heaveir without the tender, and was wider. The correct answer the Union Pacific Big Boy.
Beats me. Just a guess…
Well, it wasn’t the Big Boy, I can tell y’all that right now.[;)]
Darn, can I change my vote? [:P]
I will not give the answer away, but I can visit one in a local museum!!![:D]
I’m afraid that you have fallen ill with Bigboyhippopotomonstrosesmaximosultimosglobalosis, the belief that the Big Boy is the biggest, heaviest locomotive out there.[:p]
Is this a reversable condition?
Of course…You just have to study and research, and find the locomotives that exceed the Big Boy in length, weight, power, and anyother area you think is important, is all.[^]
And, take two of these pills, and call me in the morning.[8D]
I think we need some more information. Is it just the loco, or loco and tender? Is it fully loaded or empty?
BTW, I answered Allegheny because that’s the one I most often hear compared with the Big Boy whenever people ask “which one is bigger.”
No offence You need do more research on your answers, take a look at my post on your last Trivia question.
I did some research on this and you will be amazed and i’ll keep it to my self , not to spoil anything[:P]
Yes, the last question was not properly done, I shouldn’t have posted it since. But I don’t see anyhting woring with this one, which I reasearched well.
Thank you for cheating[V] I had assumed the conditions to be loaded and with tender, as they were used in service.[banghead][banghead][banghead][banghead][banghead]
I actually know this one! Yeah! But I will not tell! It is a secret! Shhh…
I think it is the Allegheny. Especially because of the way it was displaced with its wheels. It could have been the Y6b as well.
Loco only: Allegheny.
Overall weight including tender: Big Boy.
Unless you start throwing things like the C&O steam turbine into the mix. Then the C&O turbine wins on both counts.

As my wife said when she saw the question, “MEN it is always about size”. I looked at her and said to get me a LARGE fries and Large Coke. LOL
Oh, I guessed Big boy since i saw one at Steam Town.
James,
Sorry about that! I really wasn’t cheating. I was actually looking at that article on the web last week, that’s why I remembered that little tidbit. And I know this very question has been debated at least once on this forum in the not-too-distant past, and it always comes down to “loaded or unloaded,” “with or without tender,” etc.
Anyway, many apologies if I’ve spoiled the fun on this one. In retrospect, I shouldn’t have given out that much information, so I’m deleting the “incriminating” lines from my original post.
I’ll keep my mouth (keyboard?) shut from now on.
The Y6b isn’t even close. [:D] They only slightly outweigh the heaviest Challengers (loco only). The Y6b weighs about 100,000 or so pounds less than a Big Boy. I think it’s the Allegheny too.[:D]
