Train Trivia 11/2/05 (ANSWERED)

America’s railroads reached the highest mileage in _______, since then the mileage has only declined.

  1. 1916
  2. 1911
  3. 1923
  4. 1936

Easy as pie (maybe) 3. 1923

Well, I know that some little used rail was pulled up for scrap in WWI so I will guess 1911.

dd

…1923

1916

I believe 1916 is correct–they reprinted an Official Guide from that year, for that reason.

1916 is the year, mileage was slightly over 254,000. Even by the standards of that era, there was a lot of duplicate and redundant mileage.

I heard it was the twenties because much of West Texas wasn’t coated with competing lines until after WWI.

1918…Thats when the Highway act was signed…

Uhmmmm,I don’t think 1918 was one of the choices ![%-)]

  1. Western Pacific wasn’t finished in 1916.

1916!
