Going straight from the coal fields to the sea at right angles to the mountains isn’t cheap! Not to mention that the locating engineers had to use a pretzel for a straightedge.

The view of the eastern approach to the tunnel under the Blue Ridge Parkway is spectacular, even though you can’t get a direct view of the three successive tunnels on one tangent.

I don’t know if it included stolen money or not. Was the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway (the answer folks) notorious for swindleing people?[:-,]

I mostly mean on the Trains Magazine side.
