IT IS A UP FETTERS CHALLENGER THE CLASS WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1936, BUT THIS LOCMOTIVE WAS BUILT IN '37.
It’s one of UP’s original Challengers
It is one of UP’s early Challengers. It was built in 1937. It is a Class CSA-2 bulit by ALCO for passenger service on the UP and converted to burn oil when delivered in 1937. The one in the picture was originaly 3939 until 1944 when it was renumbered to 3839. It was 110’-7" long weighed in at 876,000 lbs with tender.
Now this is just a guess from what you gave us to work with.

He asked when the type was first built, not that particular locomotive.
That answer is 1936 when ALCO delivered the first UP Challengers of class CSA-1.
Other than that, you appear to be correct.

I’ll say 85 B.C.
He did ask bout that engine or he would have put a different picture for us to look at…

Yes it is a UP Fetters Challenger . I guess I didn’t fool anybody, except maybe cspmo who thinks it is from the Flintstones. icmr is correct on everything, though 1936 or 1937 would be considered the right answer.
