Norfolk Southern’s Piedmont Division D.C.- Atlanta line runs throught there. It also gets a few train comming and going from Roanoke. As far as railfanning goes I think around the Amtrak station Craighead St is one of the few good spots to watch trains go by. Someone more familiar with the area might know some better locations.
I actually saw southbound coal train pass by the station when I was down there today working that I had paced on US 29 a half hour earlier. Catching the same train twice… bonus points. Ha
