Train Watching in Thunder Bay, Ontario

I plan on visiting Thunder Bay in the next year or two as I am really into port facilities. Just wanted to ask where are good train watching places are there.

I remember as a kid riding with my parents on a drive up to Thunder Bay from Milwaukee. Seemed like we were driving into infinity (driving… and driving… and driving…), and when we got there it was pouring rain so hard we thought the car would float away.

We went on a camping trip up there maybe 10-12 years ago, and I remember visiting a scenic overlook south of the city where you could see quite a bit of the port facilities. Not good for close-ups, though…

Way back in 1976, I would get up to Thunder Bay periodically on my day off from working for INS at Grand Portage. I always found the CP station to be a pretty good location.

Sadly Thunder Bay rail scene is not what it once was. Most CN action uses the DW&P line through Virginia Minnesota, which by the way is a good place to watch trains. CP offers more but they lose a lot of traffic to the old Soo Line mainline through Minneapolis. Thunder Bay has been hurt by NAFTA more than any other city in North America.Thunder Bay is a nice town with things to see and do; but its a hardlot life for a lot of people.
