Train Wreck in Momence, Illinois

WLS showed pictures of two trains that collieded in Momence, IL at about 8:00 AM today.

Cars dereailed and an NS unit with its snout into the side of a CN unit. It looked like the hit was at a 90 degree angle. UP engine on its side. Cab of the “attacking” NS unit looked intact.

Hope everybody walked away.

Man. how many accidents are going to happen over the Holiday weekend?? There were about three bad railroad related accidents that happened last night.

My best wishes to the people involved families, may God Bless them durring their time of suffering. I guess this was another human error accident…?

Wow! That is one ugly looking wreck! If my memory serves me correctly, this is not the first bad accident at this particular rail junction. I believe that another such collision took place several years back. Perhaps, the railroads involved need to review this crossing to make it safer.
This seems to be a bad time for train wrecks/collisions as yesterday evening (11-23) there was a wreck between a METRA train and multiple vehicles at a crossing in Chicago (one of the suburbs).[:(]

I’m just glad the wreck didn’t cause any serious injuries or deaths. I’ve run on the Up from Woodland Jct to Chicago and I know the Momence interlocking to be an automatic one. I’d hate to think the UP crew assumed they’d get the signal and realized too late that they weren’t.
I heard about this T-Bone at work today and the rerouting of CSX traffic has already begun. Northounds will come from Evansville, go east to Terre Haute and go east towards Indy and beyond. The intermodal stack trains cannot run up the Monon or the Crawfordsville because of height restrictions, so they will have to run all the way to Marion, OH up to Willard and then back west towards Chicago. I belive if any freight is rerouted it will be able to use the Monon or Crawfordsville dependent on the number of Lafayette crews available. Vice Versa for southbounds. All I know is work will be interesting tomorrow.

Sure enough the first of many reroutes has been called out of Avon this evening, Q124, which is usuall an Evansville to Danville to Chicago run has changed drastically. Now it will run Evansville to Avon (with one crew) and then Avon to Marion, OH (with another crew). There the Willard crew will take it north to Willard on the C&O, and from there it will follow the many many intermodals that already run that route to Chicago.

Wow, wow, ouch…looks like that UP dash 8 burned a bit…if you look at the vid you can see a SP SD45 in the 1999 wreck. That really sucks. (not the SD45)

I’m hearing the UP train hit the NS train.Glad to know that there was no serious injuries.If it’s the same location that GSanchez was speaking of,I think a NS conducor died in that inccident when he jumped from the locomotive before the impact.

IIRC, and maybe I don’t, I don’t think there were any fatalities in the wreck in Mommence in 1999. I don’t recall the date of that wreck but believe it was shortly after the Conrail acquisition. You may be thinking of the collision in Butler, IN, in which a NS conductor was killed. That wreck happened pre-acquisition.

You know mackb4, I believe that ValleyX may be correct as I do not recall any fatalities in the previous accident at this locale. You know who may be able to shed some light on this is n_stephenson as he seems to be very well informed. My bet is that he works for the railroad. How about it n-stephenson?
After looking at the photos, it is hard to believe that no one died! That is some whallop that the CN unit took from the NS diesel!
I guess this instance begs the following question: Seeing as there have been previous incidents here, why haven’t the railroads involved reconfigured the crossing. It may sound naive but considering the loss of motive power (those diesels don’t come cheap), rolling stock, transported goods, trackage, and time it would seem much cheaper to have invested in physically reconfiguring that crossing, thereby avoiding such incidents as this! I don’t get it… Why not change this before someone gets killed or maimed. [%-)]

By what I could see with the video, NS 9443, CN 6026, and MEC 375 were involved. A UP C40-8 was also involved but I couldn’t see the number.

It’s funny 'cus I just saw MEC 375 heading west on a BNSF manifest on Sunday.

NS will be rerouting traffic the Pasco Wa to Conway PA interchange will be rerouted from Streator IL to Chicago and the NSIKCK same way. talk about a mess. Go to www.utu.org and you can get the details on what happened better

Yep, NS and UP did in fact “merge” not the way both railroads had intended, howver I was there this summer with my wife and recall seeing more CSX than UP and not much activity on the NS ex CR ex PC EX-ex NYC remaing track of the Kankakee Gateway.
