train wreck videos

I used to have a copy of a couple-minute train wreck video downloaded from cnn.com, though I can’t find it any more. I was wondering if anybody had ever seen this video clip, or knows where on the site it is, or knows of where any other video clips of train wrecks are?

why?

Well, there are many things to learn from these things. I have seen tons of pictures of them, but never any video, except a bit on TV. Especially being on a college where the trains are about to start running again soon, I think such stuff would be really useful to show people around here, and to get the point to them not to **** around with thousands of tons. The night that rail train came through, I saw some kid crawl underneath the train because he didn’t feel like waiting for it to finish going by (it was a stop & go kind of movement). Had it started up again, police would have responded to the first death-by-train around here. You think I’m wierd or something?

I had a recording of a Fox TV show called “the Worlds Most Dangerous Train Crashes” or “When Trains Attack” or some other stupid name…Had some amazing derail footage caught by railfans like a shifting load on a flat pulling a whole train over on its side, or a grain car that falls over right next to and almost tentpegs a railfan by inches. Most was news footage of the aftermath along with computer animation of the wrecks. Interesting stuff, but a bit over dramitic in its portrayal.

I remember a few years back a NS train near Charlotte stopped on a bridge over a very flooded stream (not sure why it had stopped there), so news crews had already gotten there and then the bridge washed out and the locomotive fell a good 50 feet or so into the muddy stream. The crew had been out and safe before it collapsed, so I can say that it was rather cool to watch. Wish I could find that clip.

I think RR’s try to put the extra weight on the bridge so it won’t wash away…but too little, too late in that case.

That was a CSX train (I think an AC4400).

Vsmith,
There was a show on once about train accidents, but more like trains destroying other vehicles instead. Done sort of like those Wildest police videos shows. Could that be what you were thinking of?

I got a video from a small derailment in the yard here where 4 tank cars derailed.

are you sure that was NS. I am sure what you are talking about is CSX 237. check TRAINS issue 1997 (year) there is a good pic it was on the news back then. Also I saw it in Hamlet,NC before it wecked

Re: The locomotive on the bridge.

Yes, I saw that video footage. It was definietly a CSX “GE” wide cab unit. The crew had gotten out and then the bridge collapsed and that huge locomotive went downward nosefirst about 50 feet or so.

It actually didn’t look that bad and more than likely CSX repaired, especially considering the costs of these modern engines!

I guess it was CSX, I honestly couldn’t remember. Thought I remembered the black and white paint though. Was a few years back and only caught a glimpse of it really…

The engine was CSX #237 an AC4400. Somewhere on my computer I have a picture of it being towed to the yard in Charlotte, with mud covering the entire front end. It was repaired and still in revenue service. Several months ago it was in pusher service working in Bostic Yard in NC. I haven’t seen it lately though.

It was definitly along those lines but included many of the worst accidents of recent memory and included the video of the girl who got smacked by a commuter train E-unit. They cut the video right the instant before it hits her but i have seen the whole video and its one of those things they should show those idiots who think ROW’s are their personal jogging path.

But this one also had the bad crashes in England a few years ago, the london subway fire, the Amtrack/Conrail cra***hat Rick Gates here on this forum was involved in, and a lot of CIG animation reconstructions illustrating how the crashes occured. It was actually pretty informative, I wwish I hadnt accidently taped over it.
