One of the better (and larger) train shows is Trainfest in Milwaukee. It has the usual hobby dealers (model trains as well as prototype material, books and videos/DVDs), but it is NOT a swap meet or flea market. There are manufacturers due to the involvement of the Model Railroad Industry Association and also because Kalmbach, Walthers, Brio, and Maerklin are headquartered nearby. Sometimes new products are first displayed there. Also sometimes there are some nice “freebies” or deals from the manufacturers, and it is a chance to talk directly to the folks who make our models. (I think the guy from Stewart was surprised by how many of us want C&NW engines – out his way he probably does not hear that very much!).
But the real feature is operating layouts. There are also static displays, together with demonstrations. The facility is brand new and brightly lit with large aisles. Food is available on the premises although last year it was very slow as the vendors got used to the new building. State Fair Park is in West Allis, just west of Milwaukee proper.
I am posting this because last year it looked pretty bad for the future of Trainfest – the building had gotten substantially more expensive than it had been and it was unclear the event could continue. I had posted something that suggested that that could be the grand finale of Trainfest.
Fortunately John Tews who runs Trainfest was able to negotiate livable terms (the facility had priced itself out of so many other shows that it was bleeding red ink) so the immediate future of Trainfest looks good. See www.Trainfest.com
This year the dates are Nov 8 and 9. $10 admission, kids under 14 free with an adult. Hope to see you there.
