Training a new railfan

Today I was driving in the car (well, riding, I’m too young to drive) and lo and behold, we heard a horn in the distance. I got my 1 year old brother out of the car at the crossing (really small road, we were the only car there) and we waited for the train. He jumped about a foot when the engineer blew for the crossing, but after the locos passed he started laughing and pointing at the train.

When the end went by (it was a 10 car train with a pair of GP40-2s on the point) he started crying, apperantly because he wanted it to be longer.[8D]

I think I’ve infected him…[swg]

I hope to get him into trains and hopefully model railroading too. (he loves to look at my layout, albait he likes the scale vehicles more than the trains…)

It’s really great to hear you and your brother are “infected” railfans and I am sure I speak for all here when I wish you both many, many hours of trackside enjoyment, but something I read in your post makes me urge you to both watch out very carefully when you are trackside and keep a safe distance from the tracks when watching trains (I would suggest fifty feet or more just to be safe). We all want there to be absolutely no accidental injuries (or worse) among railfans…young or old(er). LOOK-LISTEN-LIVE and stay safe!

Yup. We were standing around 50’ away on a patch of grass. I’m sort of the safety freak in the family, I used to freak out when people would stand on the yellow line at the subway when I was younger…[:I]

Tyler,

you’ve got a talent for writing! No mangled syntax, missing or misplaced punctuation, awful spelling or plain carelessness like we see too often in these forums, and it is evident you took care in composing your post. The best stories, ideas and opinions are often undermined by poor grammar.

You are a reader and learner and should be glad for the support your parents and teachers have given you. Combined with an interest in railroads, canals, dinosaurs, Mother Theresa or anything else, you’ll be fine. Balance that with being social and you’ll be a happy person!
