i have a walthers trainline dash8-40b, will i be able to install a decoderinto it… i’m going to buy dcc and it would be great if i could convert it…i also have athearn gp-38 blue box (47.50) and was wondering if that one could be turned into dcc… the dash 8 has some wiring and circuit board running through but the gp-38 doesn’t.any help would be appreciated. thanks
There have been a couple of articles in the MR recently that show you how to install decoders in athearn locos. Indeed Digitrax sell a decoder with a wiring harness for athearn locos so you can do it without soldering.
There shouldn’t be any reason why you can’t convert the trainline loco but it is a bit more complicated so would be difficult ot put up on this board.
Try getting magazine articles and books (Lionel Strang brought out one a wee while ago) that will give you pinters and enable you to do it.
It should not be very difficult.

I think you might be able to buy a replacement circuit board for the Dash 8-40b which includes a decoder unit. You then have to solder the wires from the pickups and motor to the new circuit board.
i only have the issues starting from aug. 2003 and i couldnt find anything on the installation for the athearn decoder but i’ll keep looking thanks. where would be the best place to post a situation like this (installing decoders). im fairly new to this and i want to make sure i post things in the right place… thses forums are helpful to me and i wouldnt want to post in the wrong area thanks for the help.
Talk to your DCC system vendor and ask for recommendations for those models. They can usually steer you to the right decoder or tell you they don’t have one.
