Trains 70 Years DVD - Any patches?

Got this for Christmas and went looking and didn’t have any luck.

I remember people had some technical issues with this at launch (I recall complaints about the search feature), I recall that a few pages here and there weren’t scanned correctly and aren’t fully readable, and weren’t they going to make the remaining 2010 issues available for download that came out after this DVD was pressed? I can’t find anything on this website beyond their product page in their store about this thing.

Will they be making the 2011 issues available for those that purchased this disc and subscribed to the magazine? And can this be installed to run disc free (I haven’t actually gotten around to installing it yet, but I suspect it requires one of the disc to remain in the drive in order to use it despite residing on the hard drive)? If not, has anyone found any workarounds to accomplish it?

I want to run this on a laptop so I’m not stuck to a desk when I’m using it, but I really don’t want it remaining in the disc drive due to the potential damage to a very expensive disc if I were to move the laptop at the wrong moment when it’s accessing the disc at bootup and whenever else it would be doing so.

The Trains DVD collection runs just fine disc free after installation. Installation is pretty simple, main concern is having enough hard drive space.

There are issues with the bundled software in conjunction with the latest security upgrades to MacOS X. The fix is downloading a couple of files and copying them to the appropriate directory. Be forewarned that the files are 50+MB each.

I just came here to edit that out after discovering it works without the disc (I’m used to companies being so terrified someone might install the disc on a friend’s PC that I really didn’t think it would work disc free…nice move Kalmbach). Guess I wasn’t quick enough.

Also, I see it has all the issues through 2010. For some reason I thought this released several issues before the December one shipped and that the last few issues would be released as downloadable content. I guess I rememberd wrong.

Still, I hope they eventually fix the page scanning errors mentioned in a few threads here over the past year and work out a system where subscribers can keep adding issues to this digital collection. And an option to rotate things 90 degrees when something is at a different orientation would be great.
