I was noodling around on the internet searching for info on the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad and found this: http://trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx?view=SearchResults&q=B%26ML

I did a quick search and found a couple of the magazines on eBay.com - but the postage from the US to the UK is extortionate. Is there a site where I can get PDFs of the particular magazine or article?

I am not aware of any. Since they are copyrighted and proprietary, they represent an investment by Kalmbach Publishing, Inc, who would take a very dim view of it if they found that someone was selling them without permission, or even releasing them for free. I suggest you contact our hosts (customer service or sales) and ask them to mail you what you want. Shouldn’t be unreasonable if they are that important to you.

Railpub can also be a good source for back-issue magazines from many publishers

If you are a MR subscriber, I think you can get the all access pass for an additional $4.94/month (US). This will allow you to get the issue you want. Plus access to everything else. If you decide you don’t care for the product after a month, then you can cancel.

You can purchase back issues or photocopies of articles directly from Kalmbach.

Thanks everyone - this seems to be another of those excellent features on the Kalmbach site that aren’t taken to their logical conclusion, as there is nothing on the page to tell you how to access the articles concerned.

I’ll email Kalmbach and ask what the price is for scanning those articles.

Well I emailed Kalmbach and received no response - I’ve also looked on the “back issues” and “digital download” pages and either the relevant magazines aren’t featured at all, or the relevant issue isn’t available.

So I’m now a bit stuck.

The search results page you linked to above didn’t indicate which back issue you’re looking for. I can tell you, though, that we have back issues available for sale from a couple decades back, and before that, availability gets spotty.

Your best bet is the All-Access Archive, as someone mentioned above. All issues since the first one in 1934 are available online. Go to http://www.modelrailroader.com/allaccess.

The only reference in that link that is an obvious Kalmback magazine publication is to the Trains April 1944 issue. Looks like there was also a trackplan in the book 101 Track Plans, also a Kalmback publication.

Malc, I would check put railpub.com, see if he has the issues you need. Then contact him as to postage cost to the UK. Should be able to ship them Printed Matter, which should save you some money.

I wanted copies of the articles / back issues of the magazines mentioned on the list. I already have the all access pass but Model Railroader has limited info on the B&ML. Not being an expert in what magazines Kalmbach has historically published I’d no idea which of the magazines listed were Kalmbach publications and whether you had back issues available.

So I guess I’ll search through the options on Railpub.com as Kalmbach can’t help.

Thanks for taking the time to look a little deeper - unfortunately the track plan in that book only bears the faintest resemblance to the actual track plan! There are also a couple of plans hidden in ancient issues of MR - unfortunately they suffer from the same problem.

I just did a Google search of Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad and many different hits appeared, including this one: http://www.cprr.org/Museum/BMLRR/

I don’t know what sort of information you are looking for in one of the magazines, but I’d venture that there is much more on line.

Hi Maxman,

I found that link and indeed it is a very good site. However the magazines arrived today and I’m very pleased with them. The two HO Monthly magazines provided good photos and a workable track plan. The Short & Narrow Rails magazines provided lots of good info and plans of many buildings on the line - including the freight house at Brooks, which is clearly built to the same basic design as the freight house at Belfast, so I think I can take the Brooks design and scale it up to build the Belfast building.

So lots of good stuff.

Kalmbach did reply to my email query on the 3rd June - unfortunately this was after I’d placed my order with RailPub, and well after their two working day promised turn around on replies to emails.
