Trains.com staff: total size of hobby?

Hello folks. Is there an estimated ballpark total of the number of active model railroaders in the hobby, in North America ?
I mean everything from Scale to Garden, to HiRail.
The last MR survey estimated that 79% of the MR readers had a layout. Then there would be the Garden and HiRail groups, and of course, there would be others that do not get MR, maybe other publications.
