I had not ever seen or heard the Trains had done a similar deal, although I always thought it was a pretty good idea for a promotion… I guess, until I win a lottery prize, I’ll be one of the ones who buys it a yaear at a time…

Was it your sister publication Model Railroader than? I read I think what was an answer to a question someone had sent in concerning this and the answer then had been that they were cancelled.
And are you sure they’re not winners of contest? Doing a search just now seems to reveal that lifetime subscriptions have been offered in the past for contest winners occasionally.
I’m pretty certain I wouldn’t remember it if I hadn’t actually read it in response to a question sent in and published in Trains in print, but I can’t pinpoint when I read it. Could pretty much be anywhere in old issues of Trains from the 60s until the 90s. Only possible thing I can think of is I actually read something about Model Railroader instead and have confused the two or assumed it was a Kalmbach wide decision. Hopefully I stumble across it again someday when reading old issues of the magazine.
Any chance of digging a bit deeper? I can only go back to the mid 1990s searching both publications electronically since my college subsribes to a service that includes these two publications among their online database. If you have a easy way to go back into the years before that electronically, I bet it would be easy to locate what I read.
