To answer the earlier question; According to Wikipedia, the 3985 will probably not run until after 2016; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_3985

Awesome News! Did you ask when we will see the 3985 run again?

Hopefully some stops by this engine and others in the Bay Area of California!!

Thank you Union Pacific for takening on this challenge to bring a Big Boy back to life. Instead of running a BigBoy with passenger cars on my HO layout. In a few years my boys and I will see it for real.

A documentary showing the restoration on the History or Discovery channel would be a good idea. Glad to see they are bringing one of these back to life.

That would be cool if they brought to stockton, ca

What a GREAT project Can’t wait to see it run!

After 40 yrs. of running Locomotives on the L&N & later CSX I think it is great to see the the Biggs Running again.

I hope that UP and Trains Magazine will make a photo documentary of the entire process, from getting the 4014 ready to roll in LA, the basic repairs to make the 1200 mile move, and the entire restoration effort. This has and is a very interesting story and it needs to be recorded.

Fantastic news! Never thought I’d see the day when a Big Boy would steam again. Though 5 yrs. is a long time to wait but considering how long it’s been since one was in steam it’s a worth while wait.

In agree with Dave Seymoure, Trains Magazine, you must document this entire restoration process. I’ll be the first to buy the DVD.

Any chance of running any of the U.P. Steamers on the Santa Barbara Sub? (California Coast Line). Would seem if the Cab Forwards could handle the old line, the U.P.'S shouldn’t have any problems?

Ogden to Cheyenne, she will go through Evanston, Wyo, where my Uncle was an engineer on them…when I was about 15 or so he gave me a ride in the cab for a mile or 2…had to walk back to town but it was a thrill one never forgets and well worth the walk…we used to go down and watch them get water and coal…God bless the U.P. for keeping this bit of history alive.

Only UP would have a heart and pocketbook big enough to tackle a project this enormous. I only hope I live long enough to see this majestic machine in operation.

My vote to leave it a coal burner!

What a fabulous project by Uncle Pete. I have already started negotiating with the domestic authorities for the trip across the atlantic to see it in steam. I hope it all goes well.

I will miss seeing my “old friend” as I have seen this and other engines at the L.A. County fair as long as I can remember. the group their have always wanted to see this engine “under steam” again. Can’t wait to see it up and running again. Next maybe they restore the 9000? Now that would be a sight!
