Trains & four-wheelin'

On page 26 of the August 2005 issue of Four Wheeler magazine there is a nice photo of a UP stack train. The article is about four-wheeling (off-road) in the Mojave desert. The photo has a caption that reads ( I do not remember exactly-I saw the mag at my car repair place) “A nice spot to catch a sharp-lookin train go by”. There is another photo in the article where the band of four-wheelers are taking a break in the shade under a railroad bridge.

Nothing too earth-shattering, but I just wanted to share this; I thought it was neat to see non-railfans be able to appreciate trains too.

As long as they stay off the R/W, fine. If they and their dirt biker / off road cousins are tearing up the railroad bridge cut and fills, they deserve a hefty $$$$ fine. [:(!]

And to the witless nut case between Fraser and Winter Park (UP Moffat Tunnel Line) on the blue Kawasaki who runs in the toe of ballast almost daily, I hope the UP Special Agent finds you before a coal train does.

This is a big problem in the wheelin community of violating all kinds of private property. Gives the wheelers like me a bad rap. I have gone down some public trails though with the broncos to catch some good train viewing spots however.

I love trains and four-wheeling. I know several trails that have great views of the railroad. I get the best of both worlds.

I sounds like the photograph was taken at Glamis Dunes. Ironic if it was, there is a least one 4x4 off road person who probably does not like trains.
