trains in southestern IL

I live in Golconda IL on the civilian conservation center about 36 miles from marin Il. there is a one track main that runs through there would anyone who’s it is.

Crab Orchard and Egyptian has a line. (East west )The BNSF has a line near the mall there and the one that runs thru marion downtown I believe is BNSF ( north South)

what is the rail traffic like busy or slow. what is the average number of trains.

BNSF and the CN/IC both have lines running north from Metropolis IL through the Shawnee forest. Those two are the only rail I know of going through that area any more.

Does the traffic on these line have a high volume of trains on them.

where in the forest do the BNSF and CN run

The BNSF runs south from Marion to through the forest to Vienna, then on to Metropolis. CN starts south at Edgewood [off the Cairo line] to Robbs then into Metropolis where they cross the Ohio into Paducah KY.

I don’t know about traffic, but when me n the wife were camping by Metropolis in July, the mornings seems to be the busiest.

BNSF has a lot of coal as does the CN/IC UP has trackage right on BNSF and CN(P&I) into Paducah. Most BNSF goes to cook coal termial in metropolis some makes it over to calvert city Ky on the P&L . CN has coal that goes into calvert and grain that goes into fulton. we are starting to see lots of graintrians to fulton. BNSF has a twice weekly local that runs to Paducah. We sometimes have 6 -8 train in daylight hours thru paducah. more on the edgewood cutoff and bnsf in IL
