Play it safe! I agree.
Is that a BNSF rule or an FRA one concerning landslides, et. al.? It was my understanding that federal regs would not allow loaded passenger trains to roll past landslides (like what plague Sound Transit between Seattle and Everett) for at least 48 hours after the tracks are reopened.
If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Empire Builder wouldn’t have any luck at all this winter.
We are having a virtual Pineapple Express with heavy rains in Seattle this week, so we’ll see whether the improvements made to prevent slides on the Seattle-Everett BNSF line hold up. We already had one closure in recent weeks. National Weather Service has issed a Special Weather Statement warning of landslides.

Do the buses use parallel route 2? If so, doesn’t it pass through the slide areas also? If they take a different route, how far out of the way do they have to go to avoid avalanche danger. I agree with the need to play it safe. We don’t need passengers in trains (or buses) going down the mountain and/or getting buried!
It’s interesting that this story, and many like it from contributor Justin Franz, are TRAINS Newswire EXCLUSIVE articles.
I don’t know what the parameters are for TRAINS with regard to exclusivity, but the same article by the same author is available online to even those who haven’t heard of TRAINS at:
