Mr. Gwynne referrs to the largest Railway Museum, I assume he is referring to the National Railway Museum headquartered in Youk. Well I guess it depends on how you look at it, and yes they have a wonderful collection of rolling stock and memorabilia. But from a rolling stock alone point of view they have “approximately 280” while IRM has 432 railroad rolling stock items (didn’t count the buses). Might make IRM the largest.

The concept of Heritage Tourism in the United States is a mult-billion dollar industry. This has been a growing trend, as more families and individuals wish to integrate recreation with meaningful educational experiences. Heritage tourism is focused on the experience and preservation of a distinctive place and its stories, from the past to the present.

Heritage Tourism has reaped tax benefits and provided employment for variuos regions and States, but largely has fallen on deaf ears for a large majority established railroad tourist lines and museum hierarchy.

Most advocacy groups at the national level such as the Preservation Action League have done little to promote the concept as it pertains to rail oriented museums and tourist lines.

Our friends in the UK embrace Heritage Touism and understand the synergies of what a rail excursion, operating or static museum, and tourist lines can do for their economy, and will spend their Pounds chasing 611, 4501, and 765 stimulating our economy.

A big difference between North America and UK is that a much larger number of tourist lines in the UK physically connect with the main line. That allows them to run main line excursions in a way that only NS and UP are doing now and allows them to sell bigger events than North American steam operators can even dream of.

While many Brits want to come see our successes with steam many of “US” like to go there to see some of the finest examples of steam preservation/operation. Do hope the repairs around Dawlish are finished according to schedule for traveling to Penzance via the former GWR is tops on my travel this year. “Long live steam” on BOTH sides of the pond.

On the topic of British steam replicas, it would be nice if someone was to build a replica of a NYC Hudson, a LN 2-8-4, or a Clinchfield challenger.

The National Railway Museum in York has a greater proportion of its collection under roof, and fully restored. On the other hand, the Illinois Railway Museum in Union has a longer display railroad, as well as a Nebraska Zephyr to illustrate why steam speed records became moot in the States.

I’ll be making the trip from the UK to see the Big Boy definitely
