Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: ‘California Zephyr’ detours expected to continue through Memorial Day weekend

The Zepyhr’s timekeeping has been shot to shreds because of this and track work on BNSF in Iowa.

Yes it has, Vincent. Saw the same train pictured above with phase 1 heritage unit 156 and 116 in Mendota IL eastbound on Wednesday almost 6 hours late.

Is it any wonder that Amtrak has NOT been saying anything in quite some time regarding “On Time Performance”? …

“[the work] is scheduled for completion on May 28.”

Hmmm . . . they must have beaten the deadline by a day or so. On Sunday, May 25th we were at East Portal shortly after noon to watch the westbound Zephyr crawl into the tunnel.

I took the CZ out of Denver on the 9th and am happy to have missed the detour. I’ve done it once, and that was plenty. We did follow a track inspector in a high-railer through the Gore Canyon. Arrival in Sacramento was a half-hour early.

We were on No.6 on May 11 coming home from Glenwood. Stopped in Gore Canyon by a boulder between the rails. We had to make a reverse move to Azure and wait while they brought a boom truck from Kremmling. They found a second boulder on the way in. We lost about four hours.
