I should have said, severely injured (or killed).
What a miracle no one was injured. I have a feeling some folks from NTSB may not be home much this December.
David, please re-read the story, two persons injured is stated in the story, so how did you think no one was injured?
Taconite pellets are like dull stone marbles, and would not make good ballast.
Seems like this could have been avoided. Good thing it was not hazmat.
Does Taconite make good ballast? All they gotta due is spread it !!!
Ice in the air lines… same problems as Ice road truckers have, but here affected turning ON the brakes not releasing them. They probably figured one more engine could keep it from getting out of control. Should have taken only a few cars at a time. Hell with the grade crossing, Safety First!
What was the name of that CN spokesman again? I’m guessing three cubits of snow.
Three what of snow? Inches? Feet?
Taconite can easily be picked up with an electromagnet like what scrapyard cranes are equipped with.
Did the crew try dumping the air with the EOT?
In the paragraph before it says "three feet of fresh snow ".
I guess we’re all editors now. It did say 3 of snow? What is that? Take your time trains EDITOR and get it right. We will have less bantering about and less argueing between readers
Someone is gonna be fired. You have a train that was in emergency that long and you just couple up another engine and take off again? And why wasn’t the air dumped from the EOT and if it was, that should be part of the article. I think there is more to this story.
Your train travels over four miles at 40 mph in emergency, and you still try to take it down a 2.9% grade!? I’m not moving that train until it’s been given a complete inspection. There ain’t no way that was done in 45 minutes with three feet of snow, nine degrees outside and 107 cars. I’m guessing about 800 brake shoes need to be changed first!
@ MIke Price…I saw that too! Probably gonna find an ice plug in an air hose.
Train cars can be fixed/replaced . . . people can’t. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery to those who were injured.
If the information in this article is accurate, I’m still trying to figure out why the relief crew attempted to drop down a 2.9% grade if the train was as messed up as the inbound crew said. Surely the inbound crew let them know they were having major problems enroute. Actually, why did they attempt to move it at all, let alone down a grade like that? I must be missing something here…
I wonder where the Trainmaster/Road Foreman was on this?
