Betcha’ $1.4 mil is no more than 10% of the money tourists drop into the cash registers of the motels, restaurants, gas stations, souvenir shops…how many businesses and their employes that support other local businesses just by the cost of living there
$1.4 mil, cheap. Betcha.
Is the CSRR going outta business?
For the state to close/privatize Cass might be next to Washington DC closing/privatizing the Lincoln Memorial or Yellowstone Park. There are some things worth saving for ALL people and for ALL time. In pursuit of the all-mighty dollar are we ruining our history and culture???
I was there the first year Cass Scenic RR operated and have visited many times and followed its happening for the 50 years, but I am left with a giant question. How many passengers and how much revenue did the line have in their 50 years of history? Why the big secret about its passenger counts? And why do all the reports of 11% or 11.5% grades persist where the maximum is less than 9% for a few rail lengths? I recently purchased the excellent new hard cover book “Cass Scenic RR” by Tim Hensley ad Bob Withers and they did not publish any profile of the entire line, and they only made spot reference to passenger counts. It would be nice if the WV government would release a true engineering profile and a history of the patronage after all this time. Cass Scenic RR used to be a big profit making line that reportedly supported both the South Branch Valley and WVN RR, also owned in the same manner, or was that some more defective reporting?
It is my sincere hope, that the Cass scenic railroad, will continue for many years to come. Privatizing the railroad may be a way of keeping it going. There have been discussions in Charleston for many years about Cass not being a West Virginia state park. let us take politics out of this, and keep this true West Virginia tourist icon going for many years to come.
