They do save fuel, as they never run correctly!

I didn’t realize that the Green Goats had any diesel engine.

From the photo and the text, the unit appears to be a Green Goat, not a genset.

Gee, the name S&S comes to mind. S&S (Productions) used to produce the “Red Green Show”…shown mainly on PBS stations in the States…and produced in Canada.

(I know the S&S mentioned here is in no relation to the Canadian Comedy series…Just having some fun)

Not as interesting as a severely overloaded Alco. Plus the Alco probably sees less time in the shop.

The concept of the Green Goat is to use a small engine-generator to charge a large bank of batteries. The batteries provide traction power. The flaw with Green Goats is that the batteries can’t safely put out the enormous power needed to switch cars. Nor can they take the rapid recharging current needed for RR operations. When taxed, they overheat and catch fire spectacularly.

Being stationed at Duluth AFB between 62 and 64 I will forever remember the last of steam. Pity DM&IR didn’t think the log traffic wasn’t worth the effort. Having thousands of truck movements to serve that plant is simply idiotic.

The problem we had with this unit is that the computers were so sensitive to temps. Would not run over 90 degrees. Batteries were very hard to keep charged and replacement batteries now come from China. Eric made a very good comment about fuel savings because the unit sat more than ran.
The concept of the motor is good, just ahead of it time.
