Sounds like they ran a GE through there blowing flames out the stack.
How does everyone know it was a locomotive that started the fire? Perhaps it was a dripping hot bearing, or more likely vandals. How long has this tunnel been in service? If before the diesel era what did they do when steam locomotives ran through? I just shake my head when I read some of the comments here.

Fire requires 3 things: Creosote covered timbers and coal dust provided the fuel. A tunnel that acts as a chimney provided the oxygen, all that was needed was a source of heat. Whether that heat resulted from some mechanical failure, vandalism, electrical fault or chemical reaction has yet to be determined.

I agree with you on the picture. I think TRAINS should give it some sort of recognition too.
I would guess vandals also. Like others have said, If a locomotive could do this, it would have happened already.

exhaust fires don’t happen THAT often, and if this line has only one customer, how often does it see trains? I don’t see where we can rule exhaust fires out, if this were the pre-UP, SP main, that would be different.
That is a great picture. Looks like the fireman is just gonna walk right in and save the day. It’s amazing to meet how everyone jumps to conclusions on just about everything that happens out here. Let’s let the investigators do their job then we can post back and forth on what really happened. Still a great picture though.
