Can EMD build something much better today?

Hopefully, most of the parts from the Alcos were saved for use in other locomotives. Seems like such a waste.

I hope they keep that nose intact…

A shame, 487 was a locomotive that always kept popping up whenever I’d take the Empire Service. Was hoping that all six would somehow survive, but I guess not.

Back in February 1967 I saw FL9s 2010 and 2049 heading train 381 at Milford, CT.
One just now gone but the other will survive as a star!

Apparently EMD has dropped the ball somewhere along the line, just like GM car manufacturing did. Old EMD power has outlasted the competition by decades.

RIP to the FL9. I used to ride behind them on the NYC Harlem line down from Westchester into GCT back in the early 1970’s when I worked in Manhattan.

I ride the FL9’s every summer, very cool loco. Sad these were scrapped, its a shame they could sell the shells for static display, I never saw these 3 come up on any RR classifieds

I’ve rode behind FL9s in several different color schemes. From different colors on the MTA, which had a different horn. To the different color variations on Amtrak. I even have pictures that I took of a dirty FL9, which someone wrote on its side, “Test Dirt, Do Not Remove”!

I have a hard time believing they could not be used as cab control cars. Sad, I loved the covered wagons…RIP

Very sad!! We’ve come to love these grand 'ol engines over the years and it hurts to see them turned into a pile of scrap metal after they stuck around past the test of time!

I’ve heard that all 3 of the FL9AC’s at LIRR were also scrapped; only real problem I remember them having was insufficient ventilation for the inverters. As rebuilt older diesels go, these were amazing looking, fairly fast, sounded great, but due to redesign issues like the ventilation were not reliable enough.
