Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: Group prepares to move, restore former NJ Transit U34CH
And the whine as they loaded, starting from a station stop!
I believe the NJ Transit number of this unit was 4172.
20 years already? Ouch. I awoke everyday to the roar of these beasts… and I lived a mile away from the tracks. (And I still know a good one when I see it.)
What was the NJTransit # of this unit (41__) ?
What’s also nice is that I believe URHS has a few low-door Comet 1 cars sitting in Boonton. Hopefully they have a cab car to go with it to make a full train.
Bringing this U34CH to the URHS facility in Boonton is a good move.
How are these the first GE’s built for passenger service? If that’s true, then what were the Santa Fe U-Boats in the 1960’s, the U30CG and U28CG’s?!
The URHS Has 2 Comet 1 cars and 1 cab car also. the NJT number was 4172.
The difference between the ATSF passenger GE’s, Zach, is the U-34-CH’s had HEP while the U-28-CG’s and U-30-CG’s had steam generators.
The years are flying by much to quick.
How times change. I became a railfan as these units were replacing the E units in the early 70’s. Sure missed those E units and old Santa Fe coaches. Had many cab rides in the U34’s over the years. Then, on a trip back thru NJ, I saw this unit in Passaic a few years back, and it was instant nostalgia. How times change. I wonder if this is how the era of steam photographers feel when they see an F unit now.
