With only 4 remaining? That is too close for comfort as far as preservation goes. MRL should have recognized this and helped preserve one of these unusual locomotives.
How would I like it if early computer fans forced me to pay to preserve my old Mac SE (not even an SE30) or my old Boeing surplus Dell Optiplex PC? Would anyone be willing to indemnify MRL to take the old equipment off their hands?
Too bad that MRL wouldn’t keep the pair around for special occasions. In earlier years they even picked up an E unit for company specials before scrapping it when its poor condition became evident.
At least the passenger version is well represented. And even though we’re losing some classic 60’s EMD power, it’s nice that it’s due to success that has allowed them to invest in brand new EMD’s, made possible thanks in no small part to 20 cylinder EMD’s.
Mission accomplished.
You think one would be saved, no interest I suppose, and they have been in storage a long time.
That stinks. If I had the money, I’d buy one of them for myself.
The railroad should sell the usable parts to the nysw to get 3636 back on the rails.
so NONE will be left intact? ugh…
William, both SD45(-2)s and F45s are going to be scrapped or are already scrapped. 10 SD45-2s (nine of which are in SD45 carbodies), as well as the two F45s.
The first part of the article talks about SD-45’s then is about F45’s? Which are being scrapped?
ARE YOU KIDDING TRAINS NEWSWIRE? APPROVING 30 DUPLICATE COMMENTS TO POST?! WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!?
The number of F45’s will be reduced to three now. NYSW has sold F45 #3636, SD40 #3020 and GP40 #3042 for scrap in Utica, NY. All three units have been OOS for many years and heavily parted out.
You’ve got to be kidding me. No one thinks about preservation. At this rate, the only F45 that will be left is the one you can watch HD TV in at the Izaac Walton Inn! Quick! Pull out your wallets and start counting! Just unbelievable. How could we possibly let the “Draper Tapers” die?
I should say “Cowl”. Drapers are the SD40-2F-SD60F. Mind my Canadianess.
Anybody ever see the movie: Groundhog Day?
It just keeps repeating itself day after day…again and again
Maybe somebody should check on S.P. from Pennsylvania
and see if he didn’t have a stroke or heart failure and fell
across the key board.
So Mr. Palkowetz hit Submit that many times in just under 3 minutes. And the last time, he changed his rating from 1 to 5 stars. Maybe he thought they were rejecting him because of his low rating?
On topic, I really hope some museum steps in and rescues one or both of these, at least the shell.
Mr. Livingston, relax! Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything–just expressing hope that one of these units can be saved and disappointment that the MRL units might be goners. I, too, would like to see one at least cosmetically restored–they are one of the handsomest non- (or semi-) streamlined diesels built.
Sorry to hear about the F45’s
Watched the NYSW 3636 and 3020 & 3042 being placed in the siding for scrap by GP40 3040 on 14/05/2014. Grabbed a few shots for the record.
