Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: No. 4014 “wants to move”
Looking forward to seeing 4014 in operation again,"I think it’s great!!!Thank you U.P.
I visit Cheyenne every spring when the UP has it’s open house so I hope to see No. 4014 there next May.
Seems like 4014’s “chomping at the bit” to return home to Cheyenne!
Cheyenne is not it’s home since it spent time in SoCal than it did in Cheyenne. I will agree that this adopted orphan is rejoining it’s parent road.
From an operational view point, not any Big Boys’ or Challegers’ home.
A UP historical society publication which copied system employe timetables and special instructions for 1948 and 1949 does not show tonnage ratings for them in the LA Basin, none south (TT. west) of Salt Lake City.
What’s significant is that when no ratings are shown for a territory/zone/subdivision/division, the engines are prohibited there.
Lots of FA’s and FB’s…
Thank you Trains Magazine for keeping us up to date.
I love the UP steam engines-- the 844- the 3985- now I can hardly wait to hear the whistle of the 4014 blow its mournful sound and come back to life!
As an 8 year-old in 1950 I saw, heard, and felt Big Boys on Sherman Hill. Many times since I’ve seen 844 and 3985 working there too. Miracles do happen and one can go back in time. I’m looking forward to reliving a young boy’s experience on Sherman Hill with 4014.
If I understand correctly, the 4014 will be moved to the Metrolink tracks north of the Pomona fairgrounds. Once there, will it go west to the UP (ex-SP Sunset Route) in City of Industry, then back east to Colton Yard, or will arrangements be made take it immediately east on Metrolink’s (ex-ATSF) line to Fontana, then sent south to UP’s “local” yard adjacent to Interstate 10 (between Etiwanda Av and Cherry Av), then on to Colton?
There is no doubt they are glorious beasts and I would like to see at least one in steam. At the same time they are gross polluters and this should be taken into account. But perhaps just one…
Who cares about pollution… run em!!!
I’m quite excited about the move, restoration and all that goes along with it.
