Thinking big. I like that
Like the RF&P E-8, GG-1 are technically at home in Virginia. PRR’s electrification extended into Alexandria VA and PRR freights regularly run into Virginia to interchange with the RF&P, Southern and C&O.
Having started with Southern Railway in 1973 I would love to see a high hood SD40 or a GP38 painted in Southern’s tuxedo paint scheme.
Bev Fitzpatrick is the best thing to happen to this museum (outside of NS’s generosity).
Bev Fitzpatrick is intent on making the VMT into a world class museum!
I’d send the foreign power back to ‘home rails’, if there were any takers. A GG-1 in Roanoke? Don’t make sense, methinks.
VMT may want to consider trading St Louis the Wabash E8A for FT-A and Y5 to complete the collection. The Wabash E operated through St. Louis and returning the Y to Roanoke would be a great way to honor the great men and women of N&W who designed, built and operated some of the finest steam locomotives in the world. This would also complete an A-B combination FT set for Southern Ry.
I’m glad that the museum will cosmetically restore that GG1. When they said it was the worst looking, they really meant that. I was beginning to wonder what they would do with 1151 ever since I saw it sitting out back in the alley for the past year. We’ll see if they’re able to make that special exhibit. I guess with it having no pieces the exhibit wouldn’t require a fully assembled locomotive, considering it has almost no external parts.
Since 1218 was mentioned in this article and first things being first and since the museum plans to build a steam maintenance shop for the 611, I was wondering if there could be a cost analysis study to put the A back in steam and on the main again?

As stated by David Lung, the GG-1s were part of PRR’s electrification project which ran from New York and Harrisburg to Pot Yard (Potomac Yard) at Alexandria, VA. In the lexicon of locomotive excellence, the GG-1 stands at the front of the pack for speed, efficiency and endurance. Good choice VMT!
