Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: Steamtown, National Park Service prepare for government shutdown
The article states, “The last government was in 1995 and 1996, just months after Steamtown had its grand opening in Scranton.”.
What?
Please use a proof reader.
Grand opening in two different years. Amazing how that alternative history interpretation works.
It seems the choices are clearly stated. Defund and get rid of Obamacare. Or shut down the non-essential government operations such as Steamtown. The last time the government was shut down, I encountered zero people who were affected. If government shuts down again, I expect to encounter zero affected people, as a government shutdown of non-essential services would have no effect on the private sector. About time the establishment Republicans started following the Tea Party people. It is obvious the establishment is unable to lead. If you read the Constitution, all spending originates in the House, not the Senate, and clearly not with Obama. In other words, the socialists hands are tied as long as the establishment Republicans can demonstrate they still have something resembling a backbone.
And don’t think those government workers at Steamtown are going to starve. I am most certain they are covered by some socialist scheme to keep them receiving a paycheck. It is the same as when the Post Office cut back. Postal workers still received a check from the government. They simply no longer had to go in to work to justify that check.
So who then is affected? Probably a few local school class trips and a few late season vacationers. That’s about it. Grandma isn’t going to starve and New York City isn’t going to implode.
Salvatore, name-calling doesn’t belong here either. I may not be a “tea party wingnut” but I do see working people outside the government adversely affected already, by private sector companies reducing full-time employees’ hours below the 30-hour-per-week threshold so they don’t have to pay into the “Affordable Health Care” pool. It appears to be a poorly-written law, hastily passed, which needs to be re-examined at the very least. By the way, none of the 435 Congressional salaries are being affected by the shutdown. THERE’S an incentive to break the stalemate!
Guse you are a moron for constently spouting your closed minded opinions ! try looking at the people who will have their pay delayed because tea party wingnuts are ruining the country and our railroads. And I’ll lay odds Trains forum moderator will ban this post like they do a lot.
Michael you are correct. The affordable care act did not take into account the unmitigated greed and callousness of most American companies.
The federal shutdown of 1995-1996 lasted from November 14, 1995 to November 19, 1995, and again from December 16, 1995 to January 06, 1996, a total of 28 days, so yes, the article is correct as written in that the shutdown covered parts of both calendar years.
Steamtown USA was nationalized into Steamtown National Historic Site in 1995, shortly before the November 14, 1995 shutdown.
This shut down also affected the operation of The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad near Cleveland, Ohio. Since all the National Parks were closed, Our trains have to stop operating. This is just about time fore the Fall colors to be at their best in northeast Ohio.
IMHO, calling each other names is not the standard of discourse to which an enthusiast forum should aspire.
The facts, as I know them here:
The shutdown affects NPS sites as they truly are non-essential, though the localities involved certainly disagree.
Localities have offered to PAY the NPS to open facilities in their areas to restore tourism, but the NPS has uniformly denied these offers.
The House has passed a bill FULLY funding the NPS to restore services and avoid the negative impacts on tourism for affected communities. The Senate leader Reid(D) and the President have REFUSED to even entertain the bill at the Senate and White House.
Any errors?
Guse, Get your fact straight! Postal Service doesn’t receive a single penny from tax payer and hasn’t since the Postal Reform act of 1970. So government shut down has no bearings on the Postal Service.
Well, the government shutdown foisted upon us by Obammy and his Demotard henchmen (and women) is a week old and other than some whining I haven’t noticed any affect yet. Remember “sequestration” and how that was going to cause the end of the world? Has it ended yet? They’ve shut down nonessential services. Well if they are nonessential then why do they exist in our debt laden government. They shoud be gone. The national parks should be run on admission and concession fees and designed to at least break even. And don’t worry about the government employees, they are just getting a vacation with deferred compensation. You can be sure that when this is over they will get back pay and get to keep their unemployment benefits too. It is the private sector employees that are laid off that I feel sorry for. They are feeling the wrath of Obammy, Harry Reid and the Demotards.
