Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: Tardy ‘Empire Builder’ challenges food vendor
It sounds like a good deal for the vendor, Amtrak, and the passengers. Do other long distance routes have similar arrangements?
I rode the Builder from Portland to Chicago July1, 2013. We were not informed of any outside meal options, only a ten minute “smoke break” at Havre. Is this only for the westbounds?
My wife, daughter, her two kids and I were on Train 7 arriving Havre the night of June 18. We had ordered the chicken dinners. However, we arrived Havre around midnight - a bit late to be eating chicken dinners! In fact the rest of my family was already asleep. I went down to the cafe lounge attendant and requested that he hold the dinners for us for our next day’s lunch. He graciously did so. And, by the way, the dinners were delicious!
Other arrangements? Not that I’m aware of, but I and others have before our trips, identified pizza delivery places at certain stops, called them from the train and had the pizza delivered to the train… even at flag stops!
There is a video game convention in Seattle each summer. Northbound gamers from California on the Coast Starlight call a pizza vendor in Centralia, Washington and have about 30 large pizzas delivered to the train, which they then eat in the lounge car. Lots of fun and a powerful smell of garlic!
