Trains News Wire EXCLUSIVE: Union Pacific Big Boy takes its first steps

YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAA

Regarding moving the locomotive with an end-loader: remember seeing pictures from the early 1930s of the Timken roller-bearing demonstrator #1111 (a big 4-8-4, later owned by NP) being pulled a short distance by three young women as a publicity stunt to dramatize its free-rolling properties?

Kudos to UP for preserving a big chunk of USA’s steam history. I’m sure this Big Boy will become the pride of the whole nation, just like Flying Scotsman is in England!

I’m sure each move well be filled by shoes of rail fans.

great I well let every one on yahoo the good news I will hope to be their in person for the big push over cajon pass.

Hell has frozen over !,

Cheyenne bound!!

Absolutely the thrill of a lifetime for a railfan!!

I will go to watch the pull up Cajon pass…that’s my neck of the woods, well, desert anyway

I can hardly contain my excitement…thank you Uncle Pete!

W00t!

Looking forward to seeing the video documentary of the move, restoration, and its return to the mailnline!

Atta Boy, Big Boy!

I hope that Trains provides us some video of the move across the parking lot at the Fairgrounds. Also, an advance notice on the pull up through Cajon Pass would be appreciated. I really want to go see this. I have not seen a Bigboy under steam since 1957 when I lived South of Cheyenne in Greeley, CO.

Kind of curious… did she groan/moan at all? Any puffs of rust “poof” from any of the bearings? Lastly… and what is with the gauge rod in the final picture?

Hoping to see some more actual videos like before.

For those of us fans who are elsewhere across America, I sure there was a plan to film/document the moves to be made. Then offer it up on YouTube so we all can enjoy this historic occasion. BigBoy back on the main!

I’m amazed that a single front-end loader can pull a 600-ton locomotive!!

I have never seen a “Big Boy” operate, but will make a trip to see this one fired up, if I live that long. Next on the agenda: rescue the Great Northern 4-8-4 ‘Northern’ #2584 from its unprotected parking spot at Havre, MT. No salt spray, up here, but… I’m not a Baldwin fan, but this loco is impressive!
