Trash talking is what that bunch from CP are real good at. My wish for 2016 is that CP will leave well enough alone and let NS run their railroad as they see fit. Lets give the guys a chance to do what they do best and make NS the great railroad that most of us think it is!
CP will probably start taking lessons from the Master, the Dumpster.
What this merger proposal will create is a railroad with a branch line to Vancouver. Sounds kind of like the Milwaukee many years ago. Of course then all Harrison has to do is sell off the line to Vancouver like CP sold the line to Nova Scotia. Hmmm. (This is an opinion only)
Any truth to the rumor that CP is going after CSX again?
The “branch line” to Vancouver may look like a branch on the map, but I am pretty sure it is much busier than Milwaukee’s pacific coast extension ever was.
It shows E. Hunter Harrison at his best, he is going to force himself onto NS. Using force to override their board and force his money in, and himself in power. I long ago said the man was bad, when he stated publicly that he hated steam, and anyone who delt with it was foolish.
Best to not pick on the poor old Milw. Rd. without facts in hand…just a couple of the salient: at the time, the Milw. was a “gilt-edged” road with much capital investment to match expansionist plans towarda the end of the “golden age.” The men making the plans were no novices and were backed with serious money, Rockefeller, Armour, etc. who wished to break the Hill monopoly going West. As they were in a big hurry to cash in, the Milw. did something different, rather than just pushing West from the railhead in traditional construction, the Road jumpstarted in segments, using the NP to haul material to staging areas. Big mistake! as the NP gouged. Avery Rockefeller in bankruptcy deposition had some words about the NP, but the fact of the matter is that capitalism, for good or ill, punishes bad business decisions. Not always immediately, but eventually.
So, we will see who makes the right decision in the current brouhaha.
And it is misnomer to parrot the CP line in the above story that the merger “has the potential to eliminate Chicago congestion.” That is simply not true, as other commentators have pointed out. A CP-NS merger would have no real effect on traffic through Chicago.
Sounds like someone’s having fun. Throughbred Beaver. Lol. Wonder what else they can come up with.
When good ole E was running CN from Montreal, I thought “Who let this idiot into the country?” Since CN is based in Montreal, I’m sure the separtists must’ve loved him. They hate English Canada and the States even more. I’m surprised the diehard Francophones didn’t run him out on a rail. Given the chance, they would’ve of.
Steam on CP and his objections? He’s got no choice really. If CP wants to run steam they can. Board of Directors should force his ass out. Railroads up here are a completely different animal compared to IC.
Recommend NS executives review the '60’s when Bill Brosnan revolutionzid future of RR’ing on the Southern; spreading to other roads across the country … hired and worked under this man in challanging times - NS has the edge (Savannah) w/widing Pan Canal oncoming; w/mamouth size ships; w/thousands of cargo containers coming/going would/should place NS in a 50/50 position …
True,… I am not a deep railroad fan, who can quote history of major lines. Maybe being from central Wisconsin makes me a little bias towards CN (although regional Wisconsin & Southern is now a favorite). I cringed a little when CN took over Wisconsin Central back in 2001. I wondered what the final outcome would be. Sure, economics dictated some parts of the WC system be abandoned, they wouldn’t fit into the big picture. It’s nice to watch several more freight trains roaming the old WC main on a daily basis, but I do miss the maroon and gold SD45’s heading up the consists.
