Can someone please give me some advice as to how to best transfer track plans to an open grid benchwork. I have read the book on how to build benchwork but it still leaves me with more questions than answers when it comes to this subject.
I usually use a marker and draw a 1 foot grid on the benchwork.
Then choose a starting point and go from there…
I draw my track plan on graph paper so that one piece of track fits in each box. I use sectional track (9" straights, 18" radius curves). When I transfer my plan to the benchwork, 1 square = 1 track piece. Going on from there is easy. Send me your email address and I’ll send you a copy of my track plan as an example.
I use accurate measurements and a tape measure. If I designed a main line to be 6 inches off the edge, that’s where I mark the track centerline and build/lay track from there. If I have a 30" radius curve, I use my plan to locate the centerpoint, and use the nail, string, and pencil method to plot the curve. I will even install a temporary board with a c-clamp to hold the nail if necessary. I will mark the top edges of boards on the benchwork, and the same once the risers and track boards are installed.

I’m more of a touchy-feely kind of builder. I’d use cardboard cut into strips to layout the trackplan on the open-grid benchwork. It’s easy to make adjustements and corrections with cardboard. The strips also provide a visual indication of where your risers need to be placed. Once the strips are in place, you can actually lay out your track to see if everything fits.
But that’s just my opinion. Your milage may vary! LOL
