Right now, we are using a ZW275 and a CW80 on the postwar O27 track layout.
We unpacked some Lionel standard O track , have decided to use it on a new separate layout and would like to purchase a used transformer, nothing fancy nor expensive but reliable.
Appreciate your suggestions as to what older Lionel transformer we should consider.

It is the same criteria as choosing for your O-27 track. They are electrically identical.

Without know what you plan on running on it modern/post war Single motor or dual motor post war eith of the above will handle it but if your running dual post war and want to run something other than just the engine I would myself ( may not be necesary but it’s just me) would look at something a lit more umph.
What rob has told you is straight on. You could do anything like a R,RW, LW, KW, there’s so many options depends what all you want to do with it now and in the future.
A ZW is always the go to. They are very affordable now. KW types are even less, per amp, but are not as ergonomic as a ZW or VW(150 Watt version of ZW). The LW is a great choice for one train operation, but many folks get hung up on the fact that the dial/voltage reading goes up from right to left, and the knob turns CCW to increase the setting.

My favorite single train transformer is the LW.
For dual controls, the ZW.
The post war ZW is the transformer that I like to use, it has 4 track outputs. The ZW is easier to replace the whistle diodes on then the KW, at least that is what my hobby shop owner has told me.
The KW has only 2 track outputs but has 3 fixed voltage outputs for accessory use. Also the KW has less space inside it if you do an overhaul and won’t allow you to add newer componants that easy.
A more modern transformer I like to use is the MTH Z-1000, I have 3 of them. I have MTH engines and need an MTH power source.
Also I am not into spending a whole lot of money on a power source like the new ZW-L or MTH Z-4000, I’d rather spend my money on an engine to use.

For dual controls, two LWs like David Smith…I have a ZW and when I had a large layout used it and either an LW or TW for accesory voltage. Got to love Lionel Transformers. The postwar days were rich with different items to enhance the trains.
LW, hands down.
Love that vintage look, heft, and backlit throttle glow.
But do keep that modern CW80 nearby, should you wish to run modern engines.

I have a Z-250 or 250 watt transformer and it is nice for just power as it has no whistle and no direction control unless you turn off the power fully then turn it back up.
