Transformer Problems

Hope someone can help…I have an MTH Z-4000 transformer running a standard engine and tender on an 8’ oval track. My train with five cars stopped running without apparent reason. I tried several other engines and to no avail…they don’t run. The track appears fine so it must be the transformer…could it be a reset issue. Any ideas before I take the transformer in for repair? Thanks in advance

Are the LED read outs showing anything? Have you tried powering down and resettting the main breakers?

I

The read out lights show 16-18 volts and 2-3 amps. I power down, but how do you reset the breakers? Thanks for your reply

There are a couple of spring loaded rocker swicthes on the lower back side of the transformer housing. If the breaker has tripped, these need to be reset.

The breakers are not tripped…any ideas?

Have you tried using the other “side” to power the track? Also, if you have access to a voltmeter, see if the transformer is realy working. I’ve seen bad lockons or dead track that caused behavior like you are seeing.

Nothing on the 4000 that is user serviceable. I believe they have to go back to Maryland for repairs.

I would take a VOM and start trying to read voltages at various places to see if I really had Voltage on the track at all points on it.

Check the output at the back of the transformer with it Disconnected from the track first. If you have no voltage with the handle at max then either the circuit breaker has tripped or the tranformer itself is bad. If you get a voltage then it would indicate good so After doing this check the track to see if the center rail is shorted to the outer rail with NOTHING on the track. Be sure to remove the lock on as well when you check the track. You could have a short on the track.
