I am putting together a Woodland Scenics Scenic Ridge layout using a slightly modified track plan (Added a siding). I will be running one train at a time and will have 4 automatic switches. The locomotive is a life-like gp38, but will add a good quality steam engine.
Could someone recommend a good quality transformer with some growth possibilities.
Let me add to my previous question. Would I be wise to go with a DCC system? I do plan on expanding my layout in modules. It is my understanding that the Atlas DCC Commander w/power pak is simple to set up, relatively cheap and will also run trains w/o DCC onboard. Is this too much for a novice?
Sorry folks - I am brand-new to this board and had no idea how extensive the historical data is. I searched and found more information about my question than I can assimilate at one time. Next time I will search first and ask questions later.
The LL GP38 is not DCC ready, and I’m not sure about your steam engine as you didn’t give any details on it. Also, DCC on a layout that size would be overkill (in my opinion).
An MRC power pack would do fine. It doesn’t have to be their high end model with all the bells and whistles either.
If you are only running one train at a time, it would be a lot more affordable to go with a regular electrical system instead of DCC. DCC mostly allows you to run more than one engine on the same stretch of track, and you don’t have this scenario.
If it just a power source you are looking for and not a controller, try collections.com. They are makers of doll house kits and have various types of 12volt transformers they suppy for lighting in their doll houses.
