I’ve read that transit usage is up in my area (NY-NJ-PA) too and this is despite a recent 25 per cent fare increase by New Jersey Transit.
Does Stockton have any commuter rail? If so does anyone know where it operates?
@Walter Rittle -
Stockton has commuter service to San Jose.
It just goes to show that people like rail. It’s too bad the Neandertals can’t see that. Most likely the naysayers don’t WANT to see that.
Walter, here’s your answer-Stockton is home for the ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) trains that operate to San Jose in the morning, and return in the evening during rush hours.
Even where I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, where we have only local city buses for the most part and not much of anything else, bus ridership has been up. and we don’t even need to thank the recent GOP convention for it either, the gains were already there before then. The only thing the convention did was clog up the traffic and the toll roads did nothing to help alleviate the congestion.
The 21% ridership increase on Pittsburgh’s T light rail came in the face of another fare increase - which people accepted - and a standoff that saw state government refusing to release funds unless the local transit workers union made big concessions - which it did. Otherwise, Allegheny County Port Authority would have seen the biggest service cuts and layoffs in its history. The public and workers have stepped up to the plate. With ridership climbing (the park & ride lots are overflowing), it’s PA’s turn to find a long-range solution to transit funding. Otherwise, a metro area of 2.25 million like Pgh, where fully half of all workers entering downtown get there by transit, will be cut off at its knees. And please don’t say “privatization.” A private company took over a line PAT abandoned in a previous service cut, jacked fares way up, and then dropped it for lack of patronage. My neighbors and I will pay our fair fare, but transit is an economic necessity and a public good, like fire and police services.
