transition rail joiners/changing from code 55 to code 70

Hey guys, I just have a couple quick questions regarding going from Code 55 to code 70 Micro Engineering HO flex track. I have some transition rail joiners… but my question is whether or not I should shim the end of the code 55 flex track, or shim the entire thing… because I’m sure that the ties are the same height. I just want to avoid having humps and bumps between sections, because there will be some transitions on the same roadbed.

Or do you think just using the transition rail joiners without any shimming won’t create any real noticeable problems or humps?

thanks guys

Not 100% certain on this one, since I’m more or less just getting back into things, but I’d say just shim the end if you’re making it into a spur that’ll run off by itslelf that way you don’t have a hump at the transition, but you will have the change in railhead height going from one to the other. Of course I might be wrong, but I’d just shim right at the transition and gradually taper the thing down.

I use transition rail joiners between Code 83 and Code100 for my HO trackage. The amount of difference in height is so slight that it is not noticeable. Bob Hahn
