Travel advisory concerning Israel

Posted here because it now allows US Government employees to ride both Jerusalem Light Rail (normally in Transit Forum) and Israel Railways intercity and suburban operations (normally in Passenger Forum) I still think the ban on local public bus travel is a mistake for Jerusalem for US Government employees. Local bus travel is still safer by far than private auto transportation.

Retransmitted Security Message from U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem for U.S. Citizens Regarding Possible Demonstrations in the Old City, September 13, 2012

For your information, U.S. Embassy Tel Aviv would like to retransmit the below Security Message for U.S. Citizens issued by U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem on September 13, 2012.

Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Possible Demonstrations in the Old City

The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem advises U.S. citizens that due to the possibility of demonstrations on Friday, September 14, the Old City of Jerusalem is off-limits to U.S. Government personnel that day. U.S. citizens are advised to defer non-essential travel to the Old City and to generally exercise an extra measure of caution.

We remind U.S. citizens that due to the possibility of demonstrations throughout the West Bank, the U.S. Consulate General has limited both official and personal travel in the West Bank until further notice. U.S. citizens are advised to defer non-essential travel to, and within, the West Bank and to exercise an extra measure of caution.

We also take this opportunity to remind U.S. citizens that demonstrations, even peaceful ones, can turn violent with little or no warning. U.S. citizens should be aware of their surroundings at all times, and avoid large crowds.

Hey thanks! Fortunately, there were no demonstrations in any part of Jerusalem that I was in this past Friday. I started from my apartment, early in the morning, went to the University, Mt. Scopus, walked to the Yeshiva, Mt. of Olives, took the 48 Egged bus back to the University and the 69 and 25 back to my apartment, then the 25 downtown, transferred to the 22 to Rehavia and my cleaners, then the 22 back downtown and use of an internet cafe, then light rail with a view up front from the CityHall station to Amunition Hill Station, and then the 25 back to my apartment, and a taxi just before sundown to the Yeshiva on Mt. of Olives. Not one demonstration! I am sure there were demonstration, but I didn’t see or hear one.

Lots of Arabs firing firecrackers for one of their religious festivals. Some fireworks last night.

I wonder what an HU student on a USA Government scholarship living in a Mt. Scopus dorm and attending HU classes was supposed to do with this advisory?
