My wife was trying to tell me about a show she saw on the Travel Channel earlier this week that featured a huge private model railroad. Apparently, the theme of the show was “millionaire toys” or something to that effect. The guy supposedly has $9 million invested in his model railroad, and it’s located in or near New York somewhere.
Does anybody know anything about this show, what the name of the show was, and when they might be showing it again? Or maybe somebody knows a link to a website about this layout? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for all the replies. Blue Duck - so it was “Billionaire Toys,” not “Millionaire Toys.” That would explain why I had such a hard time finding it in the first place. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they’re going to show it again anytime soon, though [:(]
Thanks to Torino, at least now we have a link to a website about it [:)] Can you believe those freakin’ bridges?!!
I know that MR did a cover story on that layout in the Sept 1997 issue. Perhaps they’ve done another article or two since? I don’t know for sure, but I don’t recall any recent ones. It’s in northern NJ. I have read in other’s posts that it’s worth seeing once, but not something most would keep going back too. I also hear the admission price is pretty steep - like $20 - $25? I had a business trip to that area which involved a weekend stay (and freetime) in Jan 98. I brought along that Sept 97 issue and planned on going to see it, but when it the weekend came, I spent my time visiting hobby shops and then railfanning the NEC instead, figuring maybe my next business trip I’d go see it. Well, I never did make another business trip to the area, so I never did get to see it. No big deal though, as I was more into books and videos of the real RR’s and not into modeling at that time, and I enjoyed the hobbyshop visits (looking for books and videos) and the railfanning anyways.
