Just asking, are these trains autonomous? Isn’t the rngineer (or motorman?) supposed to be paying attention to whats in front of their train? [X-)]

You are right about railroad trains not being line-of-sight vehicles. That is why signals started in use some 160 years ago. An automotible driver drives on line of sight and is supposed to be able to stop safely no matteer what the emergency. Ditto a streetcaf operator, which is why light rail operqtions today restrict speeds in downtown on=street operations, even if on dedicated lanes. Oveying traffic lights, of course. And then use signals for higher speed safety elsewhere.
The last Third Avenue Elevated had no signals except at interlodkings on its local tracks. CTA jad some simiklar operations, but I believe is completely signalled today. Am I correcdt?
CTA has wayside signals on some routes and locations and cab signalling everywhere else.
CTA trains are not autonomous. The picture shows what probably happened. The trains run right handed, so the picture is showing the front of the train. Note that there is a curve behind the train. So, coming around the curve, the motorman (who sits in the right side of the cab in the direction of travel, so he was on the inside of the curve) probably couldn’t see the tree until it was too late to stop. I’m pretty familiar with the Yellow Line (it’s part of the former North Shore Line), and trains are usually running at full speed in this area. CTA trains stop much faster than conventional trains but, of course, not as fast as a car.

It’s a participle that means ‘anointed’. Would you prefer I refer to him as ‘Oily Josh’? [;)]
Interestingly no American denomination pronounces the name correctly. (Which should not be surprising considering they can’t pronounce ‘thou’ correctly either… let alone understand how it is grammatically used.)
None of this addresses faith at all, or is supposed to. Just as the map is not the territory, the name doesn’t define the person. The Orthodox do this in a slightly different manner by never naming the Eternal, even in print; in my opinion we can kid a bit about the carpenter part without, well, the other.
More specifically, thinking about it a bit, I did not intend to reference any other religious groups ‘historically reviled’ for you-know-what. I will happily take that reference out if it offends in that respect.

No; remediating the problem would be important, too. That is not the same thing as pretending a problem doesn’t exist – which has not done too well with a number of recent threads – nor is it the same thing as making the problem disappear down the memory hole, which would be intellectually dishonest if I practiced it merely for CYA. I am not the one who brought this up again, nor would I comment on it at all (aside from asking Mr. Klepper in a PM to remove the requote) had it not been so quoted.
It is not as if the thread would stand or fall if a humorously-intended post fell flat or not, so no one would (or should) miss it. And in any case far more posts viciously directed against the particular group in question and likely far more “offensive” to it, remain not only unacknowledged, but unapologized for.
