Trees

Just starting, how can I make my own trees such as pine trees and evergreens

Can’t help you there but with a pine vise and tiny drill bit, drill a hole in the base of the finished tree.
Drill an identical hole where you are going to plant it and connect the two holes with 22-24 gauge solid wire

Eliminates knocking trees over.

I would go over to your local craft store, and take a look at their dried plants. You should be able to find something there that should work very well for the branches. (If the color is wrong…don’t worry…just repaint them).

As for the trunk, I would use either square balsa or bassword OR use round dowels and then taper them off (on either the square or dowel). You can get some really great effects with trees by using square stock and using a dremel to shape your trees. Once you have your trunk made up and painted, go ahead and start cutting your branches you got at the craft store, and start to glue them in. Wallah.

I lately have been getting on the kick of “Trees are models too” and have been experimenting with various ways to make trees. When I find some more ways…I’ll post them here.

If you get a small number of small gage wire and star to twist in it and use just enough to get the height you are looking for you can twist a fairly good looking tree armature. Using a little artistic ability and some flocking and glue, you can manufacture a quite realistic conifer. If you were to type a search 'Tree Armature 'into this web site, or most for that matter, you might just find what you are looking for.

Try juniper. Spray with glue to preserve it.

It looks good as is or you can sprinkle with groundfoam or colored sawdust.
