HSR services to Germany are planned to launch in December 2026, initially connecting Milan and Rome to Munich. The service will use Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains, which will be adapted to operate on German and Austrian tracks. A further expansion is planned for December 2028, including routes from Milan and Naples to Berlin.

The climb through the Brenner pass will be a challenge, no doubt.

Not for too long…

I rode Pisa to Rome about 20 years ago and it wasn’t fast enough where you could reside in Pisa and use the train to commute to Rome. Rome had horribly polluted air back then do to all the motor bikes. Hope it is cleaner now with electrics. Also the trainsets though sleek…some local turd burgular spray painted the side of them and they had not washed it off yet.

Pisa has cheaper hotels than Rome and the air is cleaner. Been to Rome Twice, last time was Hotel City which was cheap and in a fairly good location. First time was Hotel Porta Maggorie…kind of dumpy and bad location but near the tracks. Porta Maggorie was part of a package deal and I learned that package deals are not a good deal because you can do better on your own.

Hotel City I setup entirely via Email from my home, no need to call.

I can vouch to that. Dawn and I prefer to travel etc. our way. Upgrade to First Class and get what we want.

Definitely better to arrange things yourself.

I’d still take the slow train over Brenner pass because it’s one of my favorite train rides in the world.
