Trip Report: The Capitol Limited with Amtrak's new dining

If anyone’s interested here’s a report on my Captiol Limited trip including my views on Amtrak’s new dining… https://trainreview.com/article/my-adventure-on-amtraks-capitol-limited-from-washington-dc-to-chicago

Glad to know the worst in Amtrak food is over.

Thanks for the article.

The date on the article says Nov 15, 2018. Was that the wrong date?

Just a question: if you had the chicken, why illustrate the article with the shrimp?

Great article, Memma. Very nice photos also.

All I ask for on a train is passable food. Do you know how many truly dreadful meals I’ve had eating in fast food joints along Interstate Highways? Amtrak food will have to sink very, very low to be a deal-breaker for me.

It is indeed a shame that dining card are fading away. It was also a shame steam locomotives faded away. Time marches on.

However, I am not very forgiving what it comes to turning daily LD trains into part-timers.

Suspect the ‘stock’ photo that was available for ‘illustration’ was of shrimp.

I called it chicken rubber-chini because mine was overcooked and the chicken tasted like rubber as a result.

I had the same meals available on the Texas Eagle trip. The OP and I have a genuine difference of opinion over what is good food and what sucks. It does not surprise me though as some of the posters on this Forum would eat food at the Waffle House and extol it’s gourmet virtues as well.

The food I had was in the same black plastic container but came with an aluminum foil covering and was heated up in a microwave. The bottom of the black plastic was soft due to the heating. The Salad was normal sized headed North but had shrunk on the Southbound trip to 1/2 size and in a clear plastic container vs a bowl. This first class, the food wasn’t even airline coach quality.

The breakfest sandwich in the morning (eggs and pork sausage on a biscuit), I would rate of lesser quality than McDonalds Breakfest sandwiches but generally OK. The good news is they still have the Beef Angus Burgers in the Lounge Car and those are still pretty good heated up and only $4-5 each. Again this is Amtrak First Class and these meals do not even rise to Coach standards, in my view.

Rubber chicken (as on the banquet circuit) refers to texture, not the taste.

Aluminum foil in a micro? Hopefully removed first.

Who on here said or would say they like the Awful House food?

It does the same thing a ‘browning sleeve’ does: concentrate microwave energy shy of two-grape plasma or blue surface spark levels.

Microwave cooking trays do this with iron particles or embedded metal plates. The magnetrons are built to handle the load and any reflected power.

I am not a Microwave technologist but I thought they advanced to point now where you can use metal racks in them. If not then it was warmed in an oven…still the taste was not that great. You could tell it was frozen food.

There is at least one guy on here who says he liked and ate a lot at Waffle House, will have to wait for him to step forwards. I only ate there once and the shoes sticking to the floor did it for me.

Hey, I’m one! There is no better breakfast than the hashbrowns, eggs, sausage, and bacon all cooked in a mass of oil. Besides, you get free entertainment with your breakfast!

Shoes sticking to the floor, pants sticking to the seats, eating surfaces unwashed, and plates and utensils?

Are they still in business?

Waffle House is just like any other franchise operation - some are good and some are not.

Not al franchisee’s are successful, no matter the business. Some perform the functions and product at the highest levels and some at the lowest levels. Low level performers tend to get weeded out.

Had some bad experiences at some Waffle houses. Local friend who is picky about his food often goes to our local one. Says it is way above normal Waffles . Partly because employees are long time according to friend. Since he batches it great for Christmas mornings.
