…Witnessed the Triple Crown train coming into Muncie from the north today and I was stopped right at the cossing at Broadway where the NS crosses and where that route starts that large upgrade {slightly}, and broad loop to travel over a city street…Some of you have read my reports of this same train derailing twice within the past year at this location.
Now, the train slows to about 5 to 10 mph as it enters that loop. I suspect restrictions have been applied to the operation of that train on that wide looping curve to prevent it from being pulled off the rails on the curve’s inside as it did recently. Generally these trains are now somewhat over a 100 trailers. Note: I even had the digital with me today but everything went smooth and it stayed on the rails…
Yeah, a few weeks ago, a Triple Crown Train derailed around Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, so maybe they’re being careful now with them. There wasn’t any trackwork done recently out there in Muncie that would have necessitated a slow order for the first few trains through, was there? …It’s possible Dave, but I don’t know of any major work in that area. In general, that track condition through there is in very good shape…Heavy CWR and good ballast, etc…
I’m guessing there is a restricted speed order on that location since the derailments that I have described in past posts…
Does NS ever have anything other than CWR and heavy ballast for their mainlines?
MC…where is this at in Muncie? My son is at BSU and I was down there recently and ended up downtown where quite a few tracks seemed to cross.

I was just out in the Altoona area for a few days this past week,and am heading out again for a week in later March. I will have to see if any special train handling instructions have been implemented on Roadrailers going around Horseshoe Curve, in light of the derailment there a few weeks ago, plus the problems out there in Muncie. ed…BSU as you probably know is located in the North West sector of Muncie and this section of RR I am speaking of is in the East North East section of town.
If you come into town via Rt. 332 after exiting off I-69 continue traveling {east}, on it all the way past many businesses and continue until you pass the Muncie Mall on your left and right after that you will drive across the NS I am talking about. Make a right turn there on Broadway and continue {south}, down into town until you again cross that same railroad. Then to your left you will be able to see the beginning of the long sweeping curve i’m speaking about and at that location, look to your right and you will see our brand new renovated {$800,000} Depot into a Trail Head from the former CSX route that crosses Broadway there parallel with the NS…You can park in the parking lot at the depot and walk east on that Trail and see some of the NS route and curve I’m talking about. Interesting area for fans. That loop I’m relating to here loops around and crosses streets in Muncie slightly south of the main business area and then turns south heading for points south…and there is a route out through the western side of Muncie that heads towards Frankfort, In…and so on…
